Substances Used by Students

YOUNG ADULTS

By age 18, 25 percent of students have already tried drugs and alcohol, some having started using as early as age 8. First-time users experiment out of curiosity while continual users are motivated by stress or self-esteem issues. Common substances used by teens include alcohol, tobacco and marijuana, with 18 percent trying prescription drugs and 5 percent using illicit substances. Despite known health risks, students don’t see this behavior as risky.
