Substances Abused on College Campuses

YOUNG ADULTS

Alcohol is, by far, the most abused substance on college campuses. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, four out of five college students drink alcohol and half of those engage in binge drinking. Consuming more than three drinks in a sitting in an attempt to get drunk is considered as binge drinking. Marijuana use is the second most abused substance on college campuses. A Harvard School of Public Health survey revealed that 47 percent of college students have tried it at least once, and 30 percent of those admitted to using it in the past year. The use of prescription medications is a growing epidemic on college campuses. Confirming ease of accessibility, a study of a group of students with valid prescriptions for ADHD medication in the Journal of Addictive Diseases showed that 62 percent were distributing it to students without prescriptions.
